Ernie and His Rubber Duckie: A Friendship for the Ages — On a street filled with colorful characters, one duo stands out for their heartwarming bond:

Their relationship is more than just a boy and his toy. Rubber Duckie is Ernie’s confidant, his bath time buddy, and the star of his most famous song. “Rubber Duckie, you’re the one,” Ernie croons, expressing his love for the little yellow duck that makes his bath time so much fun.

Rubber Duckie, you’re the one,
You make bath time lots of fun.
Rubber Duckie, I’m awfully fond of you,
Vo-Vo-Dee-O.
Rubber Duckie, joy of joys,
When I squeeze you, you make noise.
Rubber Duckie, you’re my very best friend,
it’s true.
Oh, every day when I make my way to the tubby, I find a little fellow who’s cute and yellow and chubby, Rub-a-Dub-Dubby.
Rubber Duckie, you’re so fine And I’m lucky that you’re mine.
Rubber Duckie, I’m awfully fond of, Rubber Duckie, I’d like a whole pond of, Rubber Duckie, I’m awfully fond of you!

Ernie’s Rubber Duckie first appeared on Sesame Street on February 25, 1970. He sang the famous “Rubber Duckie” song in a bathtub scene that resembled his living room.

The song became so popular that it was released as a single and even reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970. It’s still a beloved classic today!

But what is it about this unlikely friendship that resonates with so many? Perhaps it’s the simplicity of their connection. Ernie’s love for his rubber duckie is uncomplicated and pure, a reminder that joy can be found in the smallest of things. Or maybe it’s the way Ernie’s imagination brings Rubber Duckie to life, turning bath time into an adventure. Whatever the reason, their bond is a testament to the power of friendship, even when one friend is a squeaky toy.

Ernie said he was lucky to have the rubber duckie as his.

Ernie and Rubber Duckie have become icons of Sesame Street, their image appearing on everything from lunchboxes to t-shirts. They’ve even been immortalized in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, where Rubber Duckie is on display. But their greatest legacy is the countless smiles they’ve brought to children’s faces around the world. Plus the spark of rubber ducks obsession and collections.
