Who is Ghostface?

Ghostface is the chilling antagonist of the Scream horror franchise. It’s not a single person but rather an identity adopted by different killers in each film. The figure is known for their menacing black hooded robe and a distinctive white ghost mask with blacked-out eyes and mouth.

Despite the change in who wears the mask, certain elements remain consistent. Ghostface often uses a distorted voice over the phone to taunt and terrorize their victims with horror movie trivia before attacking. Their weapon of choice is typically a hunting knife, and they tend to stalk their prey.

The motivations behind the Ghostface killings vary from revenge and misguided attempts to create a “real-life horror movie” to simply a desire for bloodshed and chaos. What makes Ghostface particularly unsettling is the mystery surrounding their identity in each installment, with the reveal of the killer(s) usually occurring in the final act. This “whodunit” element, combined with the slasher horror, has made Ghostface a lasting and terrifying icon in popular culture.
