Quack for a Cause: The Ducky Dash for NF Network — Imagine a day filled with laughter, vibrant costumes, and the cheerful sound of humans being rubber ducks racing for a noble cause. That’s the essence of the Ducky Dash, an annual 5K run/walk event organized by the Neurofibromatosis (NF) Network. This delightful event not only brings communities together but also raises awareness and funds for a condition that affects thousands of lives.

There is no rubber ducks racing the water ways, instead its humans racing wearing rubber duck costumes, shirts and more.

What is Neurofibromatosis (NF)?

Neurofibromatosis, or NF, is a genetic disorder that impacts the nervous system. It causes tumors to form on nerves anywhere in the body, leading to a wide range of symptoms. These can include changes in skin pigmentation, bone deformities, and in some cases, learning disabilities or hearing loss. NF is one of the most common genetic disorders, affecting approximately 1 in every 2,500 births A B. Despite its prevalence, NF remains relatively unknown to many, making awareness campaigns like the Ducky Dash all the more vital.

Neurofibromatosis is near and dear to me. My late mom, Paula Klaus Patterson, had a sever form of NF. Even her brother and his kids had a severe for of Neurofibromatosis as well. As I post this blog post, I myself have a mild form of it, however, as I age I am getting more of the neurofibroma tumors on parts of my body. I think this is a gray cause.

The Ducky Dash Experience

Held annually at the picturesque Herrick Lake in Wheaton, Illinois, the Ducky Dash is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of hope and community spirit. The event features a timed 5K run/walk, an awards ceremony, and family-friendly activities like ducky games and raffles C D.

In 2025, the Quack for a Cure will be held on May 17, 2025 at Lake Herrick in Wheaton, IL
Check in begins 8AM | Race begins 9 AM Central Time

One of the unique highlights of the Ducky Dash is the opportunity to “adopt a duck.” This playful twist allows participants to sponsor a rubber duck, with prizes awarded to the “winning ducks” in the race. It’s a fun and symbolic way to support the NF Network’s mission while engaging in some friendly competition C D.

Everyone is encouraged to dress up ducky-style. Wear swim fins and a snorkel, deck out an umbrella with ducks, go comfy in ducky PJs, sport a large inflatable duck…you name it! After the run/walk there will be an awards ceremony and ducky games for the whole family. In addition to raffle winners, prizes will be awarded for the best ducky costume and the most likes using #DuckFaceForNF. Fundraising will be encouraged with great prizes for different levels. Stay tuned for more details!

Why It Matters
